Brahmastra Part One: Shiva 2022 is the first film in a trilogy by Ayan Mukerji budgeted at $51 milllion. I was brought in by DNEG/ Prime Focus at the beginning of the project in 2016 as a storyboard artist. I went on to become the key concept artist and contribute to the overall look of the final film.

Storyboards

As well as conventional storyboards I would often get set models that I would draw over to plan sequences. This was a particularly effective and quite liberating way to plan camera moves and action.

One of the scenes that provides some of the villain’s backstory in the film. Unusually these boards where colored to provide a sense of the lighting and the foreboding mood.

Concept

Before and after pictures of a set design concept. The final set was close enough to the original concept to be quite surreal to step into.

Post production

This is an example of designing effects after the scene has been shot. I painted over the filmed footage to give the VFX artists a guide to the look and pacing of a scene.

Digital paint

One of many paintings which I produced for the animated prologue that sets the stage with a mythical backstory.
